Review - 2026-06-03 Montana City Bar & Grill For today’s ROMEO Club of Helena (Retired Old Men Eating Out) adventure we joined News Intern Corbin Vanderby from the East Helena Monitor newspaper at the Montana City Bar & Grill. We had been to this restaurant before and Otto’s burger was burnt, so he was never going back. However, we believe in second chances, so at 10:45 am we found ourselves sitting in the parking lot at 1 Jackson Creek Road in Montana City. We waited in the car for them to open at 11:00, then passed through the entryway into the main dining area. The decor has a decidedly Montana feel complete with stone facade and rough wooden walls. The bar runs the length of the room with comfortable-looking stools placed evenly down its length. A half-dozen square pedestal tables surrounded by tubular metal chairs with thick padded seats were arranged around the room. A TV located above the bar had what I assume was a sports channel playing. Sports pennants also adorned the wall above the bar. Each end of the dining area has gaming machines beckoning to those who are so inclined. I could hear music coming from the kitchen. Acoustically speaking, all of the conversations around us seemed loud. Corbin walked up to us and introduced himself. Steph, our hostess, invited us all to grab any table we wanted. We chose the one round table in the room. We sat down and began to get to know each other. Corbin has only been with the paper for a couple weeks, so we’re honored to be among his first interviews. He asked us about our backgrounds: what we both retired from, how we started writing restaurant reviews, and how long it takes to write our reviews. Steph took our drink orders and I was happy to discover that they offer coffee. My wife and I moved here from Washington State and there every restaurant offers coffee. Here I’ve literally been told, “We have a Keurig over there in the corner, but I don’t remember the last time it was used.” So Corbin and I both ordered coffee while Otto chose a Diet Pepsi. For our meals, Otto ordered the Barn Burner Burger, which is a half-pound monster burger with Andouillie Sausage, Fried Egg, Smoked Gouda, and Bacon. (It’s fun to hear Otto pronounce “Gouda” the Dutch way.) I ordered the Reuben after Steph assured me that it was a good one. Corbin decided on the Huckleberry Chicken Sandwich - A broiled chicken patty smothered in Huckleberry Barbecue sauce. Otto was impressed by the condiments on the table. Among other things, they had his essentials: ketchup, Tabasco, and mustard. He likes to mix the ketchup and Tabasco for dipping his fries. Speaking of fries, our plates were delivered and we were all impressed by the fries. When I commented on how amazing the fries were, Steph informed us that they were cooked in beef tallow. They were crispy and crunchy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. My Reuben was beautifully plated, the swirls on the grilled bread reminded me of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting. The corned beef inside was sliced thick and was very tender. The sauerkraut was plentiful and flavorful. My sandwich was as delicious as it was beautiful. Otto’s monster burger was the story of the day. He tried eating it on the bun at first, but the massive pile of meat was too much. He ended up with the bun on the plate as he bite by bite disassembled the rest of the sandwich with his knife and fork. Corbin enjoyed his chicken sandwich and stated, “This is the first time I’ve ever had huckleberry sauce on a sandwich.” He also added that he really enjoyed his fries. Great food, comfortable seating, stimulating conversation, and wonderful service. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Corbin at the Montana Bar & Grill.

Every part of this restaurant is extremely welcoming. Everything was very clean. Our service was amazing, while we waited for our food we were checked on every few minutes. My man Gavin gave us some great information, after my sister asked a few questions about certifications needed for working in the kitchen. I ordered the Ciabatta Burger, and it's everything I could've asked for and more. The Ciabatta bread was perfect texture, a little crispy on the edges, just how I like it. The wait wasn't long at all, and the food was amazing. One of Montana's best, thank you guys for a great night!
